“I wanted to share some news with you,” Taylor Swift said in a new video message to her fans, “because we’re finally making it official with one of the great loves of my life.” No, it’s not Harry Styles. Or Conor Kennedy. Or Taylor Lautner, Jake Gyllenhaal, Joe Jonas, John Mayer, Eddie Redmayne, Tim Tebow, Chord Overstreet … or any of the rest that we’re probably forgetting. Swift’s great love? Diet Coke! “We’ve been in conversations about this partnership,” Swift continued. “It’s gonna include so many fun things having to do with the tour, having to do with Diet Coke in general, a behind-the-scenes of the commercial,” she gushed. “I really can’t wait to begin all this, and it’s going to be an extraordinary ride.” The saccharine-sweet Swift is the perfect match for the saccharine-sweetene...

Instagram Beyonce has shared another photo of herself during the rehearsals for next week’s Super Bowl. However, some people are speculating about whether or not the singer is referencing the lip-sync drama regarding the second inauguration of President Barack Obama with her rehearsal attire. In the black and white pic, Bey is sporting a sweatshirt, leggings, a baseball cap and sunglasses as she rehearses. Her shirt reads: “Can I Live?” Is that a reference to being able to sing live at a major event like a presidential swearing in? You never know. It could be subtle and coy, or perhaps just a coincidence. Or it could be the singer poking a little fun at herself, since this discussion about her performance has been active and heated for several days. Additionally, ‘Can I Liv?’ is a song by ...

With exactly one week to go before Beyonce‘s blazes the stage at the Super Bowl, the singer and her troop of dancers are in intense rehearsals for what is being touted as her most epic performance yet. Taking a brief break, Pepsi-Bey posed it up on Instagram in a B-sidebywale jumper which asks “can I live?” A stylised “talk to the hand” to her critics? Who knows. What is certain, though, is that King B poised to show why she occupies the thrown next week. And we, quite literally, can’t wait! Source

Nicki Minaj took over ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ last night (Jan. 25), not in the Matt Damon way, but in the simultaneous musical guest and major interview guest way. Not only was the Harajuku Barbie supremely entertaining, but she also revealed just how the ‘American Idol‘ panel works together. Hint: She doesn’t think Mariah Carey is a big fan of hers. One thing we noticed? Minaj is fond of air kisses — she didn’t actually touch Kimmel’s face, nor her own hand when she blew kisses to her Barbz in the audience when she was introduced. Gotta keep that hot pink lipstick on point! Kimmel actually called her out on it, too. “What’s with the air kiss you gave me when you came out here?” he asked, jokingly indignant. “You don’t kiss people?!” Minaj, wearing a skintight, wild printed Robert Cavalli suit...

The Best You Never Heard: The Aaliyah Edition
Tuesday, 17 January 2012 11:40

374047ae7ba9d13e7fc6719a23755e6d The Best You Never Heard: The Aaliyah Edition

Today marks what would’ve been the 33rd birthday of R&B diva Aaliyah.  Ten years may have passed since her untimely 2001 passing, yet the fallen angel is still regularly commented on in contemporary conversations and debates in popular music.  Such only echoes the ever-present regard of her influence and style.

With just three studio albums, her nearly decade long career spanned more recognizable records than many could boast in twice the time.  Even in such, there are often overlooked or unheard numbers that don’t receive the praises of “One In A Million”, ‘Back and Forth’, ‘The One I Gave My Heart To’, and more.

Thusly, we at TGJ HQ saw it only fitting to gift this ‘Best You Never Heard’ to fans and spectators in honor of the star that is Aaliyah.

Hear Miss Haughton ‘at her best’ after the jump:

Aaliyah – ‘Giving Up’

Before Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson‘s 2006 smash film ‘Dreamgirls’ moved moved onto movie screens, Pop icon Whitney Houston was set to reboot the famed 70′s musical ‘Sparkle’.  A story that shares a storyline somewhat similar to ‘Dreamgirls’, Houston thought no songstress would better encapsulate the movies theme than ‘One In A Million’ enchantress Aaliyah.  Unfortunately, Miss Haughton was never able to fulfill her duties for the role (later given to American Idol alum Jordin Sparks).  Aaliyah did, however, get to record the movie’s famous track ‘Giving Up’.  Already made famous by another musician who passed in his prime Donny Hathaway, it seems she had big shoes to fill – and fill them she did.  Lending some of her best recorded vocals to the track, fans might be shocked when they hear how well she carried the song.  Needless to say, Sparks has alot to live up to following both R&B legends.

Aaliyah – ‘No Days Go By’

While ‘No Days Go By’ never made the final tracklisting of Aaliyah’s signature ‘One In A Million’ album in 1996, it did see the light of day as a B-side for her remake of Marvin Gaye‘s ‘Got To Give It Up’.  The latter itself is an oft-overlooked gem from the then 17 year old.  Unlike most of her other numbers, ‘Days’ stands as one of her few self-composition.  Get into the slick groove below:

Aaliyah – ‘All I Need’

Another unreleased gem, this song first found favor on Aaliyah’s posthumous release ‘I Care 4 U’.  While the title track of the greatest hits collection quickly became a fan favorite, cuts like ‘Don’t Worry’, ‘Erika Kane’, and this jam, were a bit more overlooked (mainly due to the popularity of the set’s first single ‘Miss You’).  The absence of Timbaland‘s blaring bass background does not take away from Aaliyah showing off that signature falsetto.  Get into ‘All’ below:

Aaliyah – ‘I Can Be’

One of her edgiest tracks, ‘I Can Be’ was found on the singer’s last studio LP ‘Aaliyah’.  As with most artists, Aaliyah explained in interviews that the choice to self title the album was due to its collection of songs being a representation of herself.  If such was truly the case, songs like ‘I Can Be’ were truly proof of her versatility and maturity.  A departure from her signature hip hop bump, the song fuses elements of electronica and rock, but still are R&B enough to compliment the singer’s soulful coos.  Hear Miss Haughton put her falsetto on a temporary hiatus while she delivers the controversial, slick lyrics below:

Aaliyah – ‘I Refuse’

Aaliyah’s third, self titled album introduced us all to a new, more mature Baby Girl who tackled previously unexplored topics of sex, adultery, violence, and more.  Lending one of her most dramatic numbers, ‘I Refuse’ tells the story of a woman scorned who has learned a lesson she refuses to repeat.  A budding actress at the time of its recording, Aaliyah delivers a believable and fiery vocal performance and simply reaffirmed why she was truly on her way to conquer the industry on every front.  Another stunning display of the songbird’s versatility, get into ‘Refuse’ below:

’Heartbroken’, ‘Never Givin’ Up’, ‘It’s Whatever’, ‘Extra Smooth’, and countless more oft-overlooked gems from the songbird would fill this page if we listed them all.  These are our faves, tell us yours (and give your birthday shout-out) below!

Lady Gaga Gifts Blue Ivy With 'Little Monster' Onesie

While Beyonce and Jay-Z‘s pals are gifting them with loads of posh, luxe gifts for week-old daughter Blue Ivy, which they are donating to charity, Bey’s ‘Telephone’ partner Lady Gaga sent the infant a cute and customized onesie that could only have come from the likes of Gaga. We’re hoping that Bey holds onto this gift for her little girl.

According to The Sun, Gaga sent a onesie with the words “Little Monster” scrawled across the front in pink diamante. Gaga’s supreme token of affection to her fans is her pet name for them, so labeling Blue Ivy as such is Gaga’s way of bestowing her love. Blue Ivy has led a charmed (and busy) life in her initial week on earth, appearing in a song, landing on the Billboard charts, receiving a gift and concert invite from Gaga. Lucky gal!

Sources report that Gaga included a note telling Bey that Blue needed to wear the onesie to her first Lady Gaga concert. While Gaga and Bey aren’t besties or BFFs, they have remained close and stay in touch via text and email ever since they worked on ‘Telephone’ together. The sources says that Gaga knew Bey would find the gift “hilarious.”

Paws up, Blue!

503465a78ba821869de8d7b3e673e927 Watch: Jennifer Hudson Hits The Tonight Show, Shares Mommy Advice For Beyonce

‘Where You At?’ would be an appropriate question to ask Chicagoan songbird Jennifer Hudson this week given the demands of her whirlwind book tour.  Getting nothing but love from fans for her recently released memoir ‘I Got This’, this week has seen Hudson hitting up hotspots in Atlanta, New York, and Los Angeles before finding herself dropping by Burbank studios to chat with late night king Jay Leno Friday night.

The visit comes shortly after the Grammy winner reportedly lent some ‘mommy advice’ to former ‘Dreamgirls’ co-star Beyonce.  As JHud recently revealed she was hoping to soon add a little girl to her growing family (joining 2-year-old son David Otunga, Jr.), she also took to US Weekly to share a few words for new-mommy Bey.

Get into all the action after the jump:

Via U.S. Weekly:

“Girl, get your sleep!  Embrace it. Especially because of the lives we live, a lot of times other people have to care for themselves and you have to have that mommy time,” she said regarding the hectic schedules the starlets share. “We talked about this when I had my munchkin. It goes so fast. She’s going to look up and [Blue]‘s going to be six months. Next thing you know, she’s going to be walking.”

If there’s one set of new parents who can afford to buy their own baby gifts, it’s Beyonce and Jay-Z. However, so many well-intentioned fans and friends have been sending them presents for daughter Blue Ivy, they’ve decided to donate nearly all of them to charity.

The Daily Star (via Contact Music) quotes an insider who says, “They’ve been sent literally hundreds of gifts in the past few days. Oprah Winfrey gave a huge trunk of children’s books and others like Diddy, Kanye West, Rihanna and Mariah Carey have all been sending luxurious baby treats.”

The source continues, “Jay-Z and Beyonce have decided to donate a massive selection of the presents to local charities for young mothers. They’ve already got the most precious gift — their new baby daughter — so they want to help out other parents who haven’t been as fortunate.”

The youngest person ever to chart on Billboard, Blue Ivy is now the owner of one expensive item her parents decided not to donate. The source explains, “A close friend of theirs in the music industry gave them a diamond-encrusted Cartier dummy — it must have cost $20,000. Blue has officially got her first piece of bling!”

Saturday, 14 January 2012 11:41

divas Showdown: Whos the Ultimate Diva?
Diva. A word, much like ‘flop’, ‘epic’, and ‘underrated’, that has, in years of late, seen itself overused and overextended to any chick who ever owned an ounce of relevancy. But, before it was a household term, there were a select few who denoted ‘diva’ effortlessly, helping to turn the term into the epitome of estrogenic swag that it is today. And while every genre has its set of leading ladies, there are some whose range defied limits – unable to be captured by any musical mode. In such, they captured the hearts of legions of fans and earned the title ‘diva’ by merit and not self-christening.

The divine 9 (plus 1…) – Aretha, Celine, Diana, Janet, Madonna, Mariah, Patti, Tina, and Whitney need no introduction. By mention of mononym alone, these musical monarchs inspire applause. So, in one of our most epic showdowns yet, we turn to you – That Grape Juice faithful – to tell us who dominates the diva domain?

In areas of performance, fashion, and overall influence, cast your vote for the ultimate as the Pop elite faceoff after the jump. They paved the way and set the bar for the likes of Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and more to glide their heels across, but they’re still the few your faves are still trying to be…
